Nuclear Astrophysics with Radioactive Nuclear Beams: Indirect Methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
The review describes a number of indirect methods in nuclear astrophysics using radioactive beams: Coulomb dissociation, transfer reactions (the ANC method), breakup of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies, the use other spectroscopic measurements, including -decay studies and the determination of resonance parameters. The examples chosen are drawn from the experiments the author was involved in the last decade together with his group at Texas A&M University. One example discussed in particular is that of the reactions used to determine the S17 astrophysical factor for the 7Be(p, )8B reaction, crucial for the understanding the solar neutrino problem. We discuss also the case of the proton drip line nucleus 23Al. From its study we extract data to determine the stellar reaction rates for 22Mg(p, )23Al and 22Na(p, )23Mg. Both breakup and beta-decay methods were used in these latter studies.

Design Issues of Radioactive Ion Beam Facilities
There is an increasing interest in Radioactive Ion Beams throughout the world. These ions open new domains of research for nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and atomic physics. Two methods are used for the production of these beams: fragmentation of a primary, high energy heavy ion beam passing through a thin target or nuclei production in a thick target bombarded either by a heavy ion beam...

Breakup of loosely bound nuclei as indirect method in nuclear astrophysics: Abstract. We discuss the use of one-nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. These are peripheral processes, therefore we can extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) from which reaction rates of astrophysical interest can be inf...

Beams of short-lived radioactive nuclei are needed for frontier experimental research in nuclear structure, reactions, and astrophysics. Negatively charged radioactive ion beams have unique advantages and allow for the use of a tandem accelerator for post-acceleration, which can provide the highest beamquality and continuously variable energies. Negative ion beams can be obtainedwith high inten...

After reviewing some of the basic concepts, nomenclatures and parametrizations of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology, we introduce a few central problems in Nuclear Astrophysics, including the hot-CNO cycle, helium burning and solar neutrino’s. We demonstrate that Secondary (Radioactive) Nuclear Beams allow for considerable progress on these problems.
